The article will critically examine the alleged role of religion in the making of the Greek-Orthodox place, space and territories of the numerically most important Christian Arab community in the Middle East. Through various examples, it will illustrate the variety of scales and stakes which have given the opportunity to a wide range of individuals and institutions present in all the geographical, political, and social contexts of the Middle East to invent a many-facetted, opportunistic and loosely-defined Orthodox identity.
